This could be your next perfect everyday watch. At a very reasonable price for the features that are packed into this superbly made watch that bunches WAY above its weight, the Ball watch brand has an interesting history and a pedigree of watchmaking to match. Ball has introduced their new fully in-house movement in one of their most popular Engineer III models; the Marvelight. The Engineer III Marvelight measures in at 40mm in diameter with a height of 13.5mm. The dimension allows the wearer to have sportier wearability as compared to the earlier Marvelight which is only at 40mm. Further, it features a screwed-in crown, commonly found on most Ball’s watches, allowing it to have a 100m water resistant. Once the time and date adjustments are done, screwing back the crown will enable one to bring it out for some splash around water.
The look of this watch is likened to a Rolex Datejust – almost equal in performance (see below water resistance, shock resistance, Antimagnetic properties, Luminosity) it is a super cool watch that will look and perform as well in the corporate meeting room as it would around the pool. Sport-elegance is not an easy design to achieve. This watch has its own character with a classic watch design, all while enhancing the luminescent technology so closely associated with the brand.
The new Engineer III Marvelight introduces an unprecedented degree of luminosity to BALL’s “sport elegant” collection. Easy legibility of a timepiece both by day and by night is one of BALL Watch’s mottos. It has been from the very outset of the brand, when its founder, Webster Clay Ball, stablished very exacting legibility standards as early as 1891. In order for mechanical watches to be read even in total darkness, the dial and hands of all BALL timepieces are fitted with luminescent micro gas tubes. This state-of-the-art Swiss technology used by the BALL Watch consists in encapsulating H3 gas in glass micro tubes. Light energy is released when the H3 molecules strike the internal colored surface of the tubes. This phenomenon can last up to 25 years without requiring recharge from any outside light or energy source. The powerful light emitted naturally and continuously by the H3 gas
means that you can read the time in pitch darkness. Furthermore, its luminosity is up to a hundred times more effective than other light sources commonly used in watchmaking.
Ever true to its luminescent technology, BALL Watch has devised a dial with indexes marked by H3 micro gas tubes that are three times wider than those normally used for this collection. In the dark, they give off a superb and intense ice blue glow. The index at 12 o’clock stands out in green – BALL’s corporate color – as do the hands, also fitted with micro gas tubes. This play of colors, revealed by the night, makes telling the time at a glance even easier. Likewise, the timepiece’s understated and elegant dial is kept free of any unnecessary detail that could reduce its readability.
The BALL logo, symbolizing precision in accordance with official railroad standards since 1891, has been added to the discreet graduations around the outside edge of the dial, along with the prestigious “Swiss Made” manufacturing origin’s designation. The diameter of the polished stainless steel case is at 40mm and represents BALL’s careful consideration to a watch design that is both classic and sporty at the same time. The high reliability and precision of this three hands watch – hours, minutes and sweep seconds – are based on a Swiss automatic mechanical movement, a guarantee of Swiss technology and accuracy. As a trademark logo on many of the brand’s classic models, the RR (“RailRoad”) monogram stands out delicately at the end of the seconds hand and subtly recalls BALL’s railroad heritage. The antireflective sapphire crystal incorporates a Cyclops magnifying lens positioned over the date window at 3 o’clock, making it easy to read. The crown, as the movement’s regulator component, is directly connected to it and is thus one of the most vulnerable parts of a watch because it can carry external shocks right down into the caliber. To reduce this risk, the Engineer II Marvelight’s crown can be screwed-in tight to the case after the watch has been set. The model’s water resistance to 100 meters is also improved by the screw-in crown. The solid construction of this watch means it can withstand impacts of up to 5,000Gs and is protected against magnetic fields to an intensity of 4,800A/m.
The Engineer II Marvelight is enhanced by a stainless steel bracelet with a folding buckle. The contrast between the brushed finish of the external links with the polished internal links adds a touch of chic to the bracelet’s sporty look. Today, more than ever, BALL Watch is continuing its
journey and asserting its role as a key protagonist int he exploration of modern time and the evolution of watchmaking history.
What makes the Engineer III Marvelight really unique is the use of 904L stainless steel through and through. This steel has been used primarily by the big “R” company for decades now. 904L grade stainless steel is unlike any other steel. Due to its extra amounts of chromium, molybdenum, nickel and copper, 904L steel features superior resistance to corrosion, rust and acids. While its unique hardness allows it to withstand extreme conditions, it also requires special machinery and production processes in order to be shaped. Visually, 904L grade steel has an exceptional high polish compared to 316L steel and ages exquisitely well.
Ball Watch Company is one of the most respected and established watch brands in the United States with their watches Made in Switzerland. They have been updating their product range in the 21st century, enabling them to keep pace with shifting consumer patterns. Not leaving their roots, Ball continues to upheld original details, such as the watch dial that faithfully follows the design guidelines for the standard railway watch. Till this day, Ball makes superior watches that endure all adverse conditions,
Whilst it looks to be styled on the Datejust, it has its own character and personality and is a striking conversation piece on its own merits. A fantastic watch.
