Presenting an early, collectable, incredibly rare 1954 Rolex Datejust 6305, 36mm, automatic watch. The watch is in its original un-polished condition, has had 1 owner and is in working order. Watch comes with a vintage appropriate authentic Rolex box but not the original box supplied at purchase.

A superb example of steel Rolex Datejust “Ovettone Bubbleback” ref. 6305-1, manufactured in 1954. This timepiece is a true symbol of timeless elegance.

Its nickname, the Ovettone (which roughly translate as ‘big egg’ in Italian referring to its semi-bubble shaped case) is a vintage fusion of early sports Rolex and elegant dress watches. It is a beautifully proportioned watch that was considered oversized for the era. This is due to the rotor being screwed onto the movement, requiring more space at the back of the movement thus the case back formed to accommodate that.

Provenance…

This watch has had one owner since its purchase in 1954. It originally belonged to the seller’s Great Uncle, a surveyor, who at the time travelled and often worked overseas. We believe he may have purchased this Rolex in South Africa (explaining the rare Mexican jubilee bracelet) or he may have purchased it on one of his many visits to various other countries.

After his passing the watch spent its life in a drawer until the seller’s Great Aunt passed away at the end of the last century. It has remained the possession of the Nephew ever since.

This watch is in its original, pre-owned, never-polished condition with the original parts from its purchase date in 1954.

The watch is in working order however it was decided not to clean or service the watch prior to sale to add to the wabi-sabi charm of this stunning piece of Swiss horological history.

This is a true rare example of Rolex’s exquisite watch-making capabilities.
