Tool Watch? Utility Watch? Sports Watch? Daytime Watch? Evening Watch? Dress Watch?
How about “Yes” to all of them – and there aren’t many luxury watches out there that you can say that about! With this watch you get the best of both worlds – the iron fist and the velvet glove.
The Cartier Santos is a great looking watch. It’s masculine but with elegant curves. It’s also very versatile. You can wear it for formal occasions but it’s not a traditional dress watch like the Calatrava or Cellini for example. Likewise, it’s sporty but not as ‘tooly’ as say a Seamaster or Submariner. It is however, the go-to watch for stylish gentleman everywhere and the brand name ‘Cartier’ ranks right up there with Rolex when it comes to brand recognition.
This watch is rich in watch-making history and, like the Submariner, has earned its spot as an iconic watch.
Personally – I own this watch and for me I wear it far more than any other of my watches.
What makes it so popular is its enduring design. The Cartier Santos of today doesn’t look that different from the model Louis Cartier first conceived over a century ago. Functional, practical and yet inherently attractive. What more could you ask from a luxury watch?
This is an upsized contemporary Cartier watch for the 21st century.
This is the original aviator watch ahead of all others and initially a pure tool watch which, over the years got restyled and adjusted to a dressier watch / smart casual watch.
This watch is always mentioned as 38 x 51mm lug to lug. However if you don’t include the lugs it is more like 38mm x 38mm, so it wears like a conventional 40mm watch would if it were to be round. It is just 10.34mm deep/high
People may believe it’s a chunky monkey – the reality is, the beast is under control thanks to the ergonomic curvature of the watch. Sure, it is a larger sized watch, but in reality, it wears smaller than the dimensions suggest, and it doesn’t push the limits, fitting comfortably on small, medium or large wrists with its excellent proportions / camber and with a satisfying amount of luxury watch heft.
The clasp is robust and built like a tank for super security on the wrist – closing with a premium (and satisfying) SNAP.
A beautiful black croc strap that is slightly bulstered at the lugs and beautifully tapered at the clasp make for year-round suitability. Replacement Cartier or aftermarket straps are easily available if you wanted to change.
Lets talk about the screwed in bezel – here’s a statement… Louis Cartier beat Gerald Genta to the punch by almost seven decades when it comes to watches and screws forming part of a watches DNA and aesthetic genetic make-up (AP, IWC).
The dials pay tribute to Cartier watches of the past with an intriguing and classic dial with blackened broad sword hands with lume.
Clean look with no date
42 hr power reserve.
100m water resistance (push-in crown). Although not a screw down crown, this fact isn’t advertised, but I have pressure tested this to 100m with success.
The story of the origins of the Cartier Santos has become the stuff of legend.
In the early 20th century, a Brazilian aviation pioneer named Alberto Santos-Dumont was living in Paris. He was the heir of a wealthy family of coffee producers. This allowed him to dedicate his life to aeronautical study and experimentation. In fact, many claim he was the first to achieve powered flight in 1906. As opposed to the Wright brothers who did achieve lift-off, but not unaided, at Kitty Hawk 1903. But that’s a story for another time.
Santos-Dumont had a problem though. Using a pocket watch during his field tests was proving impractical. Downright dangerous even. So, he turned to his friend for help. That friend happened to be Louis Cartier. The grandson of Cartier founder Louis-François Cartier. He ran the Paris branch of Cartier and is responsible for some of the company’s most celebrated designs.
After listening to his friend’s complaints, he created a flat watch with a distinctive square bezel. Critically, he attached a leather strap to the case so it could be worn on the wrist. And just like that, in 1904, the first Pilot’s watch was born.
Santos-Dumont loved his new watch and wore it every time he flew. A celebrity of the era, it wasn’t long before people noticed something unusual on his wrist. At the time, men did not wear wristwatches. Instead they carried pocket watches.
Santos-Dumont, being one of the original influencers, helped change all that.
Louis Cartier recognised the opportunity immediately. So, he commissioned movement maker Edmond Jaeger to mass produce the watch. In 1911, the Cartier Santos became what is considered to be the first wristwatch for men. Launched during an era defined by an obsession with progress it was an overnight hit. It’s no exaggeration to say the Cartier Santos played a key role in the move away from pocket watches.
“Santos 100” was announced in 2004 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Santos.
The bezel uses screws like the fuselage of an aircraft, and has a tough ‘tool watch’ type design and yet the beauty of a smart casual or evening wear watch. That is not an easy watchmaking feat to achieve.
The size of the case and dial has been increased from the previous model, but it is true that the Cartier-ness common to Cartier watches has not been destroyed. The gold bezel accentuates the Cartier-specific Roman index dial.
